I went with a buddy to buy him a new car today. A 2009 GTI, which is replacing his very rusty 2001 Protege. We both test drove it, the seller seemed legit and the price was right. 4600 bucks.
It’s far from perfect, some interior imperfections like the leather peeling off the shift knob, and the sunglasses holder broken off. Outside rust on the front corners of the rocker panel, and the bottom corners of the hatch. Mechanically all seems well, aside from a MAF problem that causes an odd idle. When you rev it up, and let it go back down to idle it kinda of does it in stages like 1500rpm.pause.1400.pause. 1300pause and so on until it hits a happy idle of 1000-8000rpm. It has been maintained, new timing chain, new tires, ball joints up front, sway bar end links. All done recently with receipts. Only mods are an Injen cold arid intake, and blow off valve. It also came with a new MAF(or is it a MAP?)
If this car had been 6k I would have said RUN but for 4600 bucks it’s a lot of car, with a few problems. Oh and yes it has the plaid seats and a manual trans.

I couldn't find a single crew cab GTI for less than $10k in my neck of the woods... That's why I bought a GLI. I say NP!

09 was the TFSI right? I know the FSI needs new cam follower every other oil change just to be safe and if not replaced, they will wreck the cam. Make sure that the motor does not have that issue.

‘09 is TFSI, yes. It just has the chain tensioner that likes to grenade and introduce the pistons to the valves. Mine’s never been replaced... Every time I start my car I get a little scared.

Wow, that is a seriously NP. Out here four door GTIs of that vintage are generally five figures.

Probably talking about the hpfp can follower. I never had problems on mine, I think it’s from people running aggressive fuel pressure or substandard oil.

IIRC t hat model year should still be covered under an 11 year corrosion warranty. My 2008 is still covered for a short time.

Is it 11 years? We both thought it was 10. Production date is 6/08 so if it’s 11 years then it’s definitely stick covered

I was surprised by how quickly I got accustomed to it. The clutch was a lot lighter then my BMW but that was the only thing that stuck out to me after a 10 mile drive and a few pulls.

Mkv gti owner with 160K on the clock now... absolutely love it still.
Was getting some work done on it a few weeks ago, and in talking with the old school vw mechanic, he was saying the mkv gti is one of the most solid cars vw has ever produced......

Nice price! I sold my 08 Rabbit for $3400 with 120k miles. As much as I enjoyed that car for the past 10 years, the GTI is definitely a step above it i n terms of performance. You and your friend did great!
However, I just bought my brother’s ‘11 GTI with 80k miles for $6, 500. Hard to beat the family discount ;)

By some odd chance of fate... Google led me back here. Haven't even logged into Kinja in 3ish years... My advice for you (as a near master certified VW mechanic) is to have a dealership do a PPI and confirm that the maf issue is actually a MAF and not a rear main seal issue which the older TSIs had a major issue with. Other than that they are pretty solid. Make sure you have timing chains done with the new revision tensioner also.

In November 2018, after much market research and patience (nine months), I was able to find a DSG 4Door 2007 MK5 GTI with just under 127k miles, in the color United Grey, for $3200 on CarGurus, and closed the sale in two days. I was prepared with a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI), cash in the bank, and some great friends who drove me a state away to pick it up. The seller was first owner, no accidents, well-maintained with documented paper receipts, and backed by a Carfax report. The cloth interior was immaculate, with perfect headliner, two sets of floor mats, and two keys. There were things worn, which is to be expected, and the sunglasses holder was broken. New tires (all around), brakes rotors and calipers for the rear. The engine had no issues, and the only problem that was mentioned from the previous owner, and PPI was brake and calipers on the front, and a hand brake issue that is non-invasive. I have since replaced the front brakes, calipers and rotors, both front axles, and a worn bushing from the rear trailing arms. I’m due for another oil change in seven hundred miles, DSG oil change, and rear struts/ springs but between you and me I’ll probably swap to coil overs.
I love how quick this thing is, with how nimble you can be when you need to peak in and out of traffic pockets. The community is so delightful and helpful. I’m in North Jersey, so I’d like to connect with anyone who is willing.

He got the better motor (TSI) rather than the earlier FSI. That's good news.

Nice.
2008 Candy White MKV owner here. Bought it used with 40k on the clock in 2011. About to roll 200k in a month or so.
Its been an amazing little car. Though it’s had it’s moments. I’m tuned and went through the stock clutch, and a BFI Stage 3 (junk kit). BFI went out under 10k. Replaced it with a Southbend Stage 3.
I had my timing belt snap on me. Though my fault as it was during a hard time in my life and I neglected the car for about a year. So I had the head rebuilt. Belt went around 160k.
Recently upgraded my HPFP (I’m an FSI) and moved from Stage 2 to 2+ and am about to upgrade brakes front and rear to get ready for a Stage 3 kit.
Its a very capable and fun car. I have an H&R Sport cup kit paired with an H&R rear sway, UnibraceXB, 034 motor/trans/subframe mounts. It’s nimble for what it is and love it.
My plan is to drive it until it burns to the ground.
